Let us begin by hearing from Jesus:
Mat 7:13-15 "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
This text tells us that because of false teachers few will find the way to eternal life. Today false teachers are telling people that all one must do to be saved is believe. The fact that James said the "devils also believe, and tremble" (James 2:19) should be a red flag to all who seek truth. If there is more to salvation than faith, then those deceived are not going to be among the "few" that find eternal life. The truth on this matter is confirmed in many passages, but the following are clear and emphatic:
Mat 7:21-27 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."
Hebrews 5:9 "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;"
What one must obey and exactly when one is saved are clearly set forth in Romans 6:3-4; 16-18:
"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you."

You have a duty to yourself to learn the truth.
2 Tim. 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
John 8:30-32 "As he spake these words, many believed on him. Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
This passage tells us that belief alone is not enough - one must "continue" in the word of God. It also tells us that the truth will make one free. Doctrines of men might be popular in our day, but the truth as to how to have eternal life is found in the New Testament that teaches us what to do to be saved and how to worship God acceptably (Matt. 15:9; 1 Cor. 14:37).
