Deut. 24:1-2 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. 2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
Some preachers today deny that a certificate of divorcement is an essential component to the divorce process. This is because they know that apoluo (often errantly translated as divorce) does not mean divorce. So, to defend their belief that Jesus condemned the divorced to a life of celibacy, they contend that apoluo, which results only in separation, is divorce. In essence, they are contending for the idea that when a spouse "departs" or "leaves" or is “sent out” or "put away," he or she is divorced. Still, these preachers deny that divorce ends the marriage. Or, if they admit that divorce ends marriage, they assert that the divorced person may not marry because Jesus said so. Thus, all they have are passages where Jesus said the apoluoed woman will commit adultery if she marries, which denies the teaching God has provided for us through command and personal example (Deut. 24:1, 2; Jer. 3:8).
Look at verse two above. If you take it out of context it supports the above-mentioned false notion. But context demands that verse one be considered, which clearly includes and requires that a certificate be placed in the woman's hand for her to be free to marry. When the woman was apoluoed she would commit adultery because she was NOT divorced, rather than because she WAS divorced. Many preachers today are preaching this wrong, and people are suffering because of it and souls are being lost.
